The Ontario government has announced a major increase in COVID-19-related maximum capacity limits at major indoor and outdoor sports venues such as the Rogers Center and the Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto.
“With health care and public health indicators currently stable and vaccination testing now in place, we can recommend a cautious lowering of capacity limits in certain settings,” said Dr. Kieran Moore, chief medical officer for health, on Friday. Ontario, in an update. in the afternoon, taking into account that the increases will occur mainly in places where proof of vaccination is required.
“Increasing the capacity limits does not mean that we can let our guard down. We must remain cautious and humble in the face of this variant of the Delta ”.

Moore said the revised rules will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
In interior spaces for meetings and events (convention and conference centers, banquet halls, etc.), theaters, cinemas, concerts, sporting events, race venues and commercial television and film shootings with the public, the number of attendees can be increased up to 50 percent of approved capacity or 10,000 people (whichever is less).
For outdoor event spaces where there is only room for customers, up to 75 percent of the approved capacity or 15,000 people (whichever is less) will now be allowed.
When it comes to outdoor event venues where people are seated, up to 75 percent of approved capacity or 30,000 people (whichever is less) can now be accommodated.

Officials said that seated outdoor venues can see a greater number of people because mobility is less and therefore reduces the risk of potential transmission of COVID-19.
The announcement came just a day after the Toronto Blue Jays announced the release of additional seats for the final six home games of the regular season, citing ongoing discussions with the office of Prime Minister Doug Ford and Moore. The team said the increase would be in line with public health measures.
In an update right after Moore’s announcement, the Jays announced that the 500L section at the Rogers Center would reopen to visitors now that up to 30,000 fans will be allowed in attendance.
The current capacity limit at the Rogers Center under Ontario’s COVID-19 regulations is 15,000 fans. At Scotiabank Arena, the limit was limited to 1,000 fans. Both places have vaccination policies.
