The president of the Ile-de-France region, Valérie Pécresse, announced Thursday, July 22 in an interview with Figaro his candidacy for the 2022 presidential election.

“I am a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic to restore French pride. I can’t stand people talking instead of acting ”, affirms the president of the Free movement !, which is also due to speak Thursday at 8 p.m. on TF1. “We must break with ten years of bad choices, half measures, indecision, and ultimately [d’]sagging of our country ”, she adds.

“We need a single candidate from the alliance of the right and the center”

Asked about her intention to run for the right-wing primary, the former member of the Republicans (LR) claims to want “To play collectively, because you need a single candidate from the alliance of the right and the center for the alternation”. “I’m not afraid of the primary. I will do anything to win and bring people together ”, insists Mme Pécresse.

The one who will show up “As a free woman” affirms his desire to “Put the country in order” after the mandate of Emmanuel Macron:

“A five-year term for not much, and I say it with regret, with very few reforms, such as the postponed pensions, lowered and contested authority figures, our flouted laws, abysmal deficits, increased fractures. “

Reelected in June at the head of Ile-de-France, she is the second ex-LR contender to announce her candidacy on the right, after her counterpart from Hauts-de-France, Xavier Bertrand, at the end of March. First Chiraquian, she was minister of higher education then minister of the budget under the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy.

Xavier Bertrand confuses the issue

Mme Pécresse and four other potential candidates (Michel Barnier, Philippe Juvin, Bruno Retailleau, Laurent Wauquiez) met on Tuesday in Paris under the aegis of the Republicans, and had agreed on a “Single application” in 2022. The already declared suitor Xavier Bertrand, who was absent, refuses at this stage to participate in a primary.

LR expects to hold an “open” primary no later than November to nominate a candidate for the presidential election, but Xavier Bertrand’s position muddies the waters. The party has set September 25 as the deadline for putative candidates to come to an agreement. If this optimistic hypothesis does not materialize, a congress will decide in the fall of a tie-breaking process, despite the reluctance of the management on the primary.

This selection process, put to the vote of the militants during the congress, will be “Then engaged and open to all activists and sympathizers of the right and the center”. Each candidate will be asked for 250 sponsorships – half of what is required for a candidate for the Elysee Palace.
