Chef José Andrés and CNN commentator Van Jones received the Courage and Civility Award on Tuesday from Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s billionaire founder. The award includes $ 100 million for each winner.
Because it is important?: Bezos made the announcement after his flight into space aboard a rocket developed by Blue Origin. He considered that Andrés and Jones, both humanitarian activists, are a role model and pointed out that the money obtained can be donated to their charity or share the wealth.
- In his acceptance speech, Andrés indicated that he will use the money to advance the work of his World Central Kitchen, which establishes community kitchens in areas affected by natural disasters.
- The celebrity chef said he wants to double food aid and change the way 3 billion people cook around the world. He argued that the pandemic caused an increase in hunger.
What do they say?: “We need unifiers and not defamers (…) People who argue hard and act tough for what they really believe, but always with courtesy and never with ad hominem attacks. And sadly, we live in a world where this is rarely the case, ”Bezos said.
- Andrés, for his part, said: “This award in itself cannot feed the world by itself. But this is the beginning of a new chapter for us. “
- Andrés’ other honors include the Humanitarian of the Year award from the James Beard Foundation in 2017 and the National Medal of Humanities in 2015.
