Floods in China: amazement and distress in Zhengzhou

Clusters of cars on an avenue still flooded: scars of the violence of the flood that overwhelmed Zhengzhou, in central China. The equivalent of a year of rain fell in three days on the metropolis of 10 million inhabitants.

Thirty-three dead and eight missing, this is the balance sheet revised upwards this Thursday by the authorities for the whole of Henan province.

In the regional capital, 700km south of Beijing, emergency services are working to clear and evacuate the water still present in several neighborhoods. A metro line was completely flooded. Public transport is still at a standstill. Residents also face water and electricity cuts. More than 370,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.

Faced with the scale of the disaster, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called for mobilization after these “extremely serious” floods.

The threat of a new rise in water levels continues to loom. The weather forecast announced more rains before a lull on Friday.
