Covid-19: the Delta variant puts Moscow under pressure

No improvement in sight in Russia in the face of the resurgence of contamination by the coronavirus. Moscow recorded infection records this weekend, with more than 9,000 new cases in 24 hours in the capital. This is three times more than two weeks ago.

According to the authorities, it is the Delta variant, which first appeared in India, which is responsible for this outbreak, with nearly 90% of patients infected according to the mayor of Moscow.

The head of the Kremlin assured that everything is being done to deal with the situation. “Our common goal is to focus all of our efforts on protecting citizens against the coronavirus. First of all, it is imperative to increase vaccination rates. We have what it takes to do it. Russia has four vaccines and new drugs are in development“said Vladimir Putin.

So far, only around 13% of the population has received a first dose. This week vaccination was made compulsory for employees of the service sector in Moscow. Epicenter of the pandemic in Russia, the capital has more than half of the number of cases in the country.

Entertainment events bringing together more than 1,000 people were canceled, resulting in the closure of the Euro football fan zone. Until the end of the month, bars and restaurants will have to close between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
