OnePlus 9 series will reportedly not feature periscope cameras

OnePlus’ next flagship, the OnePlus 9, probably won’t come with a periscope zoom lens based on recent rumors. Also, the OnePlus 9 Pro can ship with a large Quad HD (QHD +) panel.

First, filter Max Jambor (@MaxJmb) shared on Twitter that the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro will not have periscope camera lenses. That can be a disappointment for some fans, especially since many other phone makers are releasing devices with periscope lenses. Samsung, Huawei and even Oppo, which are owned by the same parent company as OnePlus and now share research and development with OnePlus, have devices or will launch devices with periscope cameras.

For those unfamiliar with the technology, periscope lenses use mirrors to bounce light that enters the camera. This allows companies to place lenses and sensors perpendicular to the lens aperture, giving them more space for larger elements and sensors, as the camera is no longer restricted by the thickness of the phone (for better understanding, check out this handy explainer on periscope cameras).

Cameras are one area OnePlus could improve on. The OnePlus 8, 8 Pro, and 8T had decent cameras, but MobileSyrup Staff reporter Bradley Bennett noted that there were some areas for improvement in his reviews. Both the 8 and 8T lacked telephoto lenses and it would be great to see some zoom hardware on the OnePlus 9, be it telephoto or periscope.

The OnePlus 9 series will have 120Hz displays

As for the screens, Android Authority reported a Weibo leak of ‘Digital chat station‘which revealed the screen specifications for the OnePlus 9 series. The OnePlus 9 will have a 6.55-inch Full HD + (FHD +) flat screen, while the 9 Pro will have a 6.78-inch curved panel with a QHD + resolution.

For those unfamiliar, FHD refers to a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, while QHD is 2560 x 1440 pixels. The ‘+’ monicker essentially means that the screen has more pixels, but not enough to run into a different resolution group. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has a QHD + screen with a resolution of 3200 x 1440 pixels thanks to its high aspect ratio of 20: 9. Although we do not yet know the exact resolution of any of the OnePlus devices, we do know that they will be larger than FHD and QHD respectively.

The Weibo leak also mentioned that both phones will offer displays with 120Hz refresh rates, perforated front camera cutouts, and possibly a 4,500mAh battery. It is unclear if the battery size applies specifically to the OnePlus 9 or to both devices. Last year’s OnePlus 8 series had different battery sizes for the 8 and 8 Pro; I would expect the same to happen with the OnePlus 9 series.

We will likely know all the details sometime in March, when OnePlus is expected to reveal the new devices. Additionally, the company could have a third entry-level ‘OnePlus 9E’ in the works that will launch alongside the 9 and 9 Pro.
