Despite the Covid, the Portuguese at the polls for the presidential election

The Portuguese began voting for a presidential election on Sunday as the country entered its second lockdown on Friday.

The election which must confirm the renewal of the incumbent candidate, the moderate conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

As all the polls predict a victory for the current head of state in the first round, the suspense relates to the score of the far-right candidate André Ventura, who could create surprise by arriving second, in front of the former Socialist MEP Ana Gomes.

Local media screenings are expected at 8:00 p.m. GMT and the official results will be announced immediately as the ballots are counted.
