Snowbirds are relearning to love winter in Mauricie

Thousands of snowbirds must have found a plan b this year and the owners of Le Brun de Maskinongé store are part of the lot.

Richard Vienneau and his wife decided to spend the winter in their small motorhome, parked right next to the store.

The couple planned to leave for the United States in November, but the border closure has turned their plans upside down. They sleep and spend their evenings inside the motorhome, heated using portable heaters powered by an extension cord plugged into the building. A minimum of water is kept inside, but the proximity to the business means that the couple still have access to a shower, bathroom and kitchen.

This type of winter camping represents quite a change for Richard Vienneau. “I had to buy myself some boots, we had nothing left! Things are going very well so far, our heating system is sufficient and we go to the general store regularly, ”he said.

Mr. Vienneau took all the necessary steps to convince his wife Isabelle to stay in the province instead of heading to Western Canada. He bought a tempo shelter 36 feet long to set up an interior terrace, with a fireplace and synthetic turf.

Snowbirds are falling in love with winter again!

Another type of reality at the Lac-Morin campsite in Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel, the only establishment in the region that is open year round. About fifty snowbirds live there in small chalets. Owner Yannick Lemay even created ice trails for them

“There is a lot more action this year, the atmosphere is really fun! I bought a resurfacer to build an ice rink. Snowbirds have fun, ”he said.

Some, like Martine Trudel and her spouse, fall in love with the Quebec winter again.

“There are dozens of us in the same situation here. We create friendships, it’s almost like in Florida! And the weather has been very mild so far. ”

The lady, who has spent her winters in the United States for 10 years, is even considering selling her condo. Next year, his exile will last three months instead of six.
