Coronavirus: RKI reports more than 14,000 new infections

EAs expected, the health authorities reported comparatively few new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) over the weekend. 14,611 new cases were submitted within one day, as the RKI announced on Sunday morning. The previous high was reached on Friday a week ago with 23,648 reported cases. Last Sunday the number was 15,741. The numbers are comparatively low on Sundays and Mondays because, according to the RKI, fewer samples are taken on the weekend and therefore fewer tests are performed overall.

R-value increases slightly

The German health authorities also reported 158 new deaths within 24 hours. A week ago, 138 deaths were reported. The trend in the number of daily deaths had recently gone up, which was also expected after the steep increase in new infections. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection rose to a total of 16,123.

The Robert Koch Institute has counted a total of 1,042,700 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. It is estimated that around 722,300 people have now recovered.

The so-called seven-day R-value was according to the RKI situation report from Saturday evening at 0.96 (previous day: 0.93). This means that 100 infected people theoretically infect 96 more people. The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If the value is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection rate subsides.
