Anti-jihadist operation in Mali

Paris renews its support for the Malian forces in their fight against terrorist groups.

French Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly went to Bamako on Monday to meet with the transitional authorities. She also returned to an operation in which at least 50 jihadists were reportedly killed.

“I would like to reveal an operation of great importance which was carried out on October 30 in Mali by the Barkhane force”, declared Florence Parly, “and which made it possible to neutralize 50 jihadists, the equivalent of a katiba, while the Malian transitional authorities reaffirmed their commitment to the fight against terrorism “.

The Ansarul Islam group unit, based near the border with Burkina Faso, was affiliated with Al Qaeda. This operation would have made it possible to thwart an imminent attack and to seize weapons and equipment, says the French army. Another operation is said to be underway, this time targeting the Islamic State group in the greater Sahara (EIGS) for a month, mobilizing 3,000 soldiers, and whose results should be known in the days to come. Nearly 5,100 French soldiers are still mobilized as part of Operation Barkhane.
