Apple now offers free repairs or replacements for AirPods Pro units experience issues with noise or static cancellation.
The new replacement program kicks in just one year after AirPods Pro’s launch, and as The edge He points out, it comes just when many owners will see their headphones’ one-year warranty expire.
Apple says it will fix AirPods with “crackling or static sounds that increase in noisy environments, with exercise, or while talking on the phone,” as well as issues where Active Noise Canceling (ANC) doesn’t work as expected, such as “a loss of bass or an increase in background sounds, such as noise from the street or airplane.”
While Apple’s service program website says that only a “small percentage” of AirPods Pro units were affected by the sound issues, it also notes that the affected units were “manufactured before October 2020.” In other words, basically all AirPods Pro units made last year could be affected by the sound issues and replaced through this program.
Considering the range of AirPods Pro units covered by the repair program, it likely means that the problem is more widespread than Apple allows. The company released supporting documents earlier this year for the same issues. Furthermore, both The edge Y 9to5Mac covered the repair program and the comments on both articles are full of people saying they had sound issues with their AirPods Pro and had to replace them. Some even had trouble with the replacement pair and repaired them again.
The service program means that Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will service the affected AirPods Pro free of charge. That could include the left bud, the right bud, or both. The program also covers affected AirPods Pro units for two years after the first retail sale.
