Although this week Walmart announced that it would remove the guns and ammunition from its sales floors, almost immediately the company reversed this decision and will now put these items back on display.
“After civil unrest earlier this week damaged several of our stores, in keeping with the actions we took over the summer, we asked the stores to move firearms and ammunition from the sales floor to a location. Safe in the back of the store in plenty of caution. As the current incidents have remained geographically isolated, we have made the decision to begin returning these products to the sales floor today“Said the company in a statement, as reported Yahoo!.
Walmart had removed firearms and ammunition from sales floors this week following protests over the police murder of Walter Wallace Jr.
It should be noted that although the weapons were not on display, they were still available for purchase. Walmart operates more than 4,700 stores in the US, and sells firearms in about half of those locations.
After a deadly mass shooting at one of the chain’s stores in El Paso, Texas, a year ago, Walmart made policy changes and stopped selling certain guns and ammunition. However, the company made it clear that it would continue to sell guns for athletes and hunters.
In addition, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon has asked customers to no longer openly bring firearms into stores, even in states where they are allowed to do so by law, unless they are authorized law enforcement officers.
