The two US presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, have very special ties to this European country, for very different reasons.
Trump and the Doonbeg Resort
Doonbeg is a small town located on the west coast of Ireland, facing the Atlantic.
Mike Pence, current vice-president, had been there in his youth. At the time, he had worked for a summer in a pub.
Doonbeg also has a special attachment to Donald Trump’s family. The boys of the current US president have already been here to drink a few beers in the local pubs.
And above all, the billionaire built in this town, an estate with a luxury hotel and golf course. A hotel complex that boosts the entire local economy.
“Trump International has very good relations with the local population, explains Rita McInerney, shopkeeper. The resort maintained beach access for locals. He gets his supplies from local suppliers. Plus, those who stay at Trump International regularly come to town to eat out or go to the pub. “
Biden and his Irish roots in Ballina
If Trump is therefore popular in the city of Doonbeg, his opponent Joe Biden has him, his fervent supporters in Ballina, further north.
Biden’s great-great-grandfather, Edward Blewitt, lived there in the early 19th century before emigrating to the United States in the 1850s.
Some members of the Biden clan still live there. We owe them this mural representing their distant cousin from America.
“In private and in public, Joe Biden often recalls that he was brought up with Irish values, Joe Biden’s cousin Laurita Blewitt’s cousin. He has a real attachment to his Irish roots. His grandmother spoke Irish. It’s part of who he is. “
Joe Biden visited Ballina twice here, in 2016 and then in 2017.
The US presidential election is scheduled for November 3.
