Julian Alaphilippe: Screamed in pain: Tour of Flanders is overshadowed by the fall of the world champion
Road bike world champion Julian Alaphillipe fell badly on the Tour of Flanders. For minutes the French writhed in pain on the floor. In the evening, the racing team announced the injury.
Julian Alaphillipe lay on the asphalt, his face contorted with pain. The French road cycling world champion grabbed his collarbone after his fall and writhed on the ground for minutes, his chances of winning the Tour of Flanders were gone, but the sporting events took a back seat due to the pictures.
In the three-way battle for victory with the Dutch Mathieu van der Poel and Wout Van Aert, Alaphilippe carelessly slammed into a companion motorcycle and rolled over. There followed anxious minutes in which the Frenchman crouched on the asphalt and screamed in pain.
As his racing stable Quickstep announced on Sunday evening, Alaphillipe broke “only” two metacarpal bones. The 28-year-old will be operated on on Monday, Flanders was his last race of the season anyway. The rainbow jersey of the road cycling world champion has not brought Alaphilippe much luck so far, two weeks ago he gave away a victory on the home straight at the classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
After the corona-related cancellation of Paris-Roubaix, which was scheduled for next Sunday, the “Ronde” was the last great classic in 2020. Van der Poel won in the final sprint.
