Two people are now being charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a child in Brantford due to alleged negligence, according to police.

Investigators have not released further information on the case due to a court-ordered publication ban. A Brantford police spokesman did not confirm whether the defendants were the boy’s guardians.

Charges of criminal negligence that caused the death were initially brought against the couple earlier this year, on February 12.

“Due to the circumstances surrounding the death, members of the Brantford Police Service Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Services were called in to lead the investigation,” police said in an initial statement in February.

“Officers worked with the Coroner’s Office and the Forensic Science Center to help determine the cause of death.”

Detectives now say “new information and further investigation” have warranted an update on previous charges.
