Wetaskiwin RCMP received a call to assist emergency medical services with a stabbing at the school at 10:55 am, said Cpl. Troy Savinkoff.

When officers arrived at the school located in Falun, Alta., they found the 16-year-old victim, a student at the school, with injuries. He was transported by STARS air ambulance to an Edmonton-area hospital.

“A 16-year-old suspect was quickly located at the scene as well and he was taken into custody by RCMP, and he remains in custody pending charges with relation to this incident,” Savinkoff said.

The suspect is also a student at the school.

The school was placed in lockdown as police investigated, but was later lifted. There is no ongoing threat to students, Savinkoff said.

This is the second time a student has been stabbed at an Edmonton-area school this month. Sixteen-year-old Karanveer Sahota was stabbed outside McNally High School in Edmonton on April 8. He died of his injuries in hospital on April 15.

Six boys and one girl, aged 14 to 17, have each been charged with second-degree murder.

Edmonton police said the attack was part of an “escalation of violence” between feuding groups of students.

Falun is approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Edmonton.
