While in 2016 sales of new cars reached 1,607,000 units sold, in 2020 only 950,000 were sold; which implies a fall of 40.8% during this period. These figures reflect a fundamental loss of dynamism in the domestic market.
In contrast, the entry of used cars from abroad has achieved some rebounds during this period; 124,000 units were imported in 2020.
This reflects that although it remains at lower levels than the sale of new cars, it has gained ground in the total light vehicle trade in Mexico.
Given the persistence of these imported cars, the Mexican authorities announced a decree to regularize these cars that circulate mainly in the border states.
