100 days into government, Samuel García faces fourth wave of Covid-19, shortage of supplies, mobility and inflation

Monterrey, NL. 100 days after the government of Samuel García Sepúlveda began in New Lion, his administration is facing a resurgence of the epidemiological problem due to the accelerated increase in Covid-19 cases, global disruptions in value chains, the need for more urban transport and an inflationary process.

The state Health Secretariat has reported that the daily incidence of new cases has increased alarmingly: seven days after Christmas with 1,393 cases, when on December 29 there were 561 cases; on January 7, when it reached a record of 4,679 cases in one day, and due to increased mobility on January 11, they added 4,442 infected people.

The Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Caintra) from New Lion He called on the population not to attend meetings in closed spaces and thus avoid contagion.

“Facing a new strain with a significant percentage of asymptomatic people and with a much higher rate of infection, as a society we need to make an additional and strong effort to break the spread of the virus in these coming weeks,” said the president of Caintra, Rodrigo Fernandez Martinez.

Shortage of inputs

In the Economic Environment Indicators for December 2021, carried out by Joana Chapa Cantú, director of the UANL Center for Economic Research, and Ana Luisa Cordero Ramos, coordinator, it indicates that moderate quarterly advances were recorded in primary and industrial activities during the period from July to September 2021.

“In this context, the comparison of the seasonally adjusted absolute value of total real GDP for the third quarter of 2021, compared to those observed in the fourth quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020, had a variation of -2.9 and -2.1%, respectively; that is, the indicator remained below its pre-pandemic levels,” the study mentions.

Shortage of inputs

On the other hand, Joana Chapa Cantú commented to The Economist, that the Monthly Indicator of Industrial Activity of last October continued to reflect a weak performance of the national secondary activity, which reinforces the idea that this pattern of behavior will continue in the fourth quarter of 2021, “considering the continuous disruptions in the chains of global supply and its pernicious effects on the productive performance of automotive manufacturing”.

In turn, the president of Caintra, explained that they are affected by the shortage of supplies, which they estimate will continue during the first half of the year due to various circumstances, including Covid-19, in addition to the fact that in the United States the number of truck options for shipments has been reduced from significantly and have increased prices.

“For companies it has been a challenge to find different sources of inputs, this is where SMEs can help a lot, because large companies look for inputs at a good price; here we can give them an opportunity, it is an issue that will continue during the first half of the year, it has not reached the point of closing factories, perhaps some companies have had to change shifts”, commented Rodrigo Fernández.

Transport

Although the state government announced on December 10, the award of 800 urban trucks based on natural gas, by lease, to the consortium represented by Thousand International Companies (Ticsa), the private initiative and some legislators have mentioned the urgency of having with enough public transportation to prevent the virus from spreading.

The vice president of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Deputies, Marcela Guerra Castillo, from the PRI, demanded that the government of Nuevo León urgently take the pertinent measures to address the problems that public transport users suffer every day since that for several years the entity has been facing a visible crisis due to the high cost and few available units of urban transport.

Through a Point of Agreement, Guerra Castillo stressed that, “although the state government announced in October 2021 a restructuring of public transport to deal with this crisis and regain control, the creation of a new charging scheme, as well as the purchase of new units to reduce the 165,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, it is urgent to implement these actions, meet the needs of the people as soon as possible and plan a better future for Nuevo León, before that this crisis is insurmountable”.

Inflation

The study by the Center for Economic Research of the UANL indicates that the national inflationary process is worrying, since the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) grew at an annual rate of 7.37% in November, the highest increase since 2001.
